Belinda Says Hay: “Do Rabbits Like Cold Weather?”

Hello. It's Belinda.

Happy October.

Lots of good things happen this month.

For starters, Midwest BunFest, on Sunday, October 25. If you live anywhere near Columbus, Ohio, I hope you will be there.

The Small Pet Select team will be at the event again this year. Stop by the booth for friendly "chit chat" and free samples.

Another good thing about October is the fall colors.

I'd like to see them but I'm too short.

Just kidding. None of the trees around here are changing yet.

And last but not least. October means the heat and humidity are finally over.

That's right. The forecast for next week calls for some nice "rabbit weather."

For me, that means 65 degrees or below. Anything warmer is too "close" in my opinion.

That's an old-timey word that means stuffy.

I like the cold so much that sometimes I sleep on the bare floor instead of my sleeping rug.

What about the rabbits in your house? Do they relax by the heat vent or pressed up against the sliding glass door?

Some rabbits like to sleep on the bed with their humans. Nice and cozy.

Others choose to "crash" in the bathroom behind the toilet. Even in the fall and winter. "They say" the porcelain is cool on the ears.

How do you like that.

If you remember nothing else from  this blog, I hope you will remember this:

"Old bones are cold bones."

I just made that up but it's true. Starting around age 7 or 8, rabbits can lose some body fat. They also get arthritis in their hips, legs and feet.

Not every rabbit but many.

So the humans need to make sure they have lots of warm spots in the house for their rabbits to "rest their bones." For example, my roommate places a padded bath mat on the floor, then layers a cotton throw rug on top. It's comfy on the elbows.

Also, be sure to block any cold air blowing under doors.

Back in January I wrote about this. About how a cold draft got me in trouble with my roommate. That blog was called "A Cold Draft, Part 1."

It happened again a few months later. So watch out for drafts is my advice.

If you have any cold weather tips to share, send it to me at [email protected].

OK that's all for now. Thanks for reading my blog and for all the support and nice messages.

Have a good week. "Stay cool."

Sincerely,

Belinda
